Convicted killer escapes from prison near Dundee

A convicted killer, Raymond McCourt, has escaped from HMP Castle Huntly, an open prison just off the A90 near Dundee, prompting an urgent manhunt.

59 year old McCourt was jailed for life for the 1993 murder of newsagent Khalil Mahmood and has been missing since yesterday evening (Tue, 22nd Apr).

The public is advised not to approach McCourt, who is believed to have connections in Glasgow and Edinburgh and uses public transport.

McCourt was previously released on license in 2015 but returned to prison the same year due to difficulties adjusting to life outside.

He is described as 6ft 2in with a stocky build, short grey hair, a beard, and reduced mobility; last seen wearing a long black trench coat and formal attire.

Police Scotland is working with the Scottish Prison Service to locate McCourt and urges the public to report any sightings via 101 or anonymously through Crimestoppers.

The escapee’s criminal history includes charges of murder, attempted murder, assault, robbery, and firearms offences.

The incident has raised concerns about security measures at open prisons like HMP Castle Huntly.
