Drunk man given suspended sentence for assault on police

A man has appeared before court for sentencing for a number of offences, including assaults on police officers and racial abuse.

Shaun Hirell, 39, of Radstone Walk, Leicester, was in the magistrates court last week for sentencing of three separate incidents, listed below.

July 2022

Hirell had been drinking in Leicester City Centre and was outside a pub on Charles Street when police attempted to arrest him. He spat at two of the officers and hit one in the face. When he was eventually placed in the van, he began making a number of threatening and racially motivated comments towards the officers.

Charges:
Assaulting an Emergency Worker (x2)
Making racially aggravated threats (x2)

August 2023

Hirell was causing a disturbance on Granby Street in Leicester at 4:30am and was arrested. During the arrest, he began shouting racist abuse towards members of the public.

Racially aggravated threatening behaviour

September 2023

Hirell was once again arrested and taken to the Euston Street police station in Leicester. Once there, he boasted about being a member of the IRA and again made racist comments towards the police officers.

Following this, he was jailed for breaching a suspended sentence for another crime.

22 week prison sentence – suspended for two years
£100 compensation each to two police officers
£400 court costs
£154 victim surcharge
